Vision

Economic Development by connecting with other critical areas in the neighborhood e.g., transportation, education, family life

Goal

Revitalize our business community and build self-sufficiency by education residents and business owner about worker supports. In addition, build on traditional andi-poverty programs by helping low-income families achieve greater economic security and stability through asset development programs.

Priorities

  • Support workforce housing projects in Rainier Beach
  • Hiring local contractors for development projects
  • Sustain local businesses – provide jobs to local residents
  • Engage in asset building activities for/through residents and youth
  • Neighborhood Planning Advocacy
  • Activate Saars/RBHS parking lots
  • Rainier Beach Merchants 2010 agenda

  • Meeting on Dec 3, 2010 with Richard Elay CWEST trainer for Rainier Beach High School as reported by Economic Development Steward Ray Hall

    Highlights of meeting:
    1.Spoke about funding for program, funders are SYEP Phillip Page is main contact and SPS, has 1,000 dollar yearly budget for Personal Protective Equipment, no field trip budget for construction exploration at unions or job site’s, needs more cordless drills, needs a GREEN in the construction field intro for youth
    2.Spoke about Curriculum used- uses NCCER Safety program and has the Building Trades Curriculum (has not implemented the curriculum fully into program yet, teaches Safety, basic hand tools, power tools, and hands on training with Wood Projects, builds model house with youth, Stage craft building, wants to include New framing Technique, Intro to Green in the Construction Building Trades, Pre-apprenticeship, and Apprenticeship Training, OSHA training, more funding, hands on training at Habitat for Humanity (provides community service hrs for Youth)
    3.Ask if Mr. Elay was open to Electrical Workers Minority Caucus Adopt a school program(EWMC) to hold works shops for his students he agreed and willing to explore the possibilities scheduled meeting for Jan 20th 3:30 at RB high

    Most surprising thing Heard:
    1.Students in program doesn’t acquire OSHA training or Certified training certificates,
    2.No Introduction to GREEN Building in the Construction Trades.

    Most controversial occurrence, statement or matter:
    1.None to report

    New thing Learned:
    1.That RB has a construction program
    2.Not much support for Career Exploration for youth in CWEST program at RB

    Specific possibilities for RB neighborhood:
    1. I believe the students in the CWEST program should get hands on experience Demolishing and reconstructing the New RB Community Center
    2. More career and job opportunities to youth in community with Union certified training and workshops
    3. Getting our Youth Section 3 certified through the Seattle Housing Authority for federally funded Construction project like Rainier Vista and Yesler Terrace
