Our Mission

The Rainier Beach Community Empowerment Coalition builds community capacity to successfully address critical issues and enhance quality of life.

Congratulations to Yolanda Gill Masundiré, Volunteer of the Year Finalist!

Congratulations to Rainier Beach resident and community activist Yolanda Gill Masundiré for being named a Volunteer of the Year Award Finalist by The African American Community Advisory Council to the Seattle Police Department.

The African American Community Advisory Council was created in mid-1996 as one of ten councils that work collaboratively with the police. The demographic advisory councils were born out of a need to hear directly from communities that often feel disenfranchised, alienated, or as though they do not have the same access as the majority population does to the police department.

The award program is named after R. Gil Kerlikowske, who served the Seattle Police Department as the chief of police from August 2000 to May 2009. Kerlikowske emphasized the importance of community partnerships and recognized that it takes the whole community working together to make Seattle one of the safest cities in the nation.

The award recognizes individuals who champion race and social justice issues to better our community, as well as public safety to build relationships with our community and police officer.

Although Yolanda didn’t take home the top award, we are proud of all she does for the Rainier Beach Neighborhood.
