Summer is in full swing and RBAC’s CSA program is going into the 4th week, but don’t worry, there is still time to join in. Our CSA program has grown this year, and we are supporting families within a wider radius. Why? Because we have increased our capacity, created new relationships, and supported our amazing farmers. People are noticing, and we can’t be more excited! If you’re thinking about signing up, here’s a few reasons why our CSA is the choice for you.
1. It’s healthy food and you’ll feel better because of it.
Eating fresh fruits and vegetables is one of the most effective ways to support your physical and mental well-being. When you sign up for our CSA bag, you’re getting produce that’s harvested throughout the week or even the very same day by our youth. This means that it’s not only fresher, but often more nutrient-dense than what you’ll find at the grocery store. To add to that, with a weekly supply of seasonal ingredients, you’re naturally encouraged to cook more meals at home and explore new, healthy recipes. Some of our flyers inside the bag even give you new ideas for recipes or the health benefits of the produce! Simply put: when you eat well, you feel well.
2. Your money stays local and in your community.
One of the most powerful things about joining a CSA is knowing exactly where your money goes and what it helps grow. When you buy produce at a large grocery store, it’s easy to forget the long, complicated journey that food takes to get there. Often, it’s been shipped across the country (or even the world), and much of the profit goes to corporations far removed from the communities they serve. Instead of funding large, out-of-state corporations, your investment in our CSA boxes supports the local economy by helping sustain small farms and keeping resources circulating within the community. In short, you’re not just buying vegetables but helping to build a more self-sufficient, economically vibrant community.
3. You practice what you preach rather than simply being a social media observer
In a world where we’re constantly encouraged to like and share social change online, participating in a CSA program is a tangible way to align your actions with your values. Whether you care about sustainability, racial equity, environmental justice, or simply eating better, signing up for a CSA bag is a practical step toward those ideals. A simple and consistent choice you can make every week to put a little more good out into the world. Our CSA bag allows you to move beyond awareness and into action, all while enjoying the simple pleasure of good food.
4. It helps support our farmers
Farming is hard work. It requires long hours, deep knowledge, and a commitment to the land and the people it feeds. Our CSA program partners with local BIPOC farmers who are growing high-quality, nutrient-rich food with care and intention. These are not massive industrial operations—they’re small to mid-sized farms where real people are planting, harvesting, and delivering produce you can trust. By signing up for our CSA bags, your support helps us care for our farmers, enabling us to continue feeding the community.
5. It builds community
CSA programs are about more than produce; they’re about connection. When you sign up, you’re joining a network of individuals who care about where their food comes from and how it’s produced. You’re also helping us in our work to improve the food environment of the Rainier Beach community and beyond. In a time when many people feel increasingly disconnected from one another, something as straightforward as a produce box can remind us of the value of community and cooperation.
Joining our CSA program is a simple, meaningful way to eat well and do good at the same time. You’ll enjoy fresh, seasonal produce each week, while supporting local farmers, strengthening your community, and making choices that align with your values. Whether you’re a long-time CSA member or trying it out for the first time, we would love to have you with us this season. Now that you’ve learned a little more about us, what we do, and what you’d be building along with us, we hope to see you sign up for this season’s CSA!
