Growing up, the most exciting part of a new school year for me was getting new school supplies. For some kids, it was new outfits, new shoes, or new classes. For me, it was opening a fresh pack of Ticonderoga pencils!

 

I loved the way school supplies smelled, how they felt, and how satisfying it was to organize them. But my family often struggled to afford supplies for all of us. Pencil pouches, binders, notebooks—it all adds up. We needed a place that made us feel prepared and supported. I needed a place that could give me the pencils of my dreams.

 

I know that the Rainier Beach Back2School Bash would have made a huge difference for me as a kid. It would have been a space where I could feel confident and ready for school, and where my family could access the resources we needed to support me and my siblings. It doesn’t get better than that.
