MLK Peace Award Nominees and Recipients honored at Seattle Center Event

January 15th the RBCEC was nominated for a Martin Luther King, Jr. Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Award sponsored by the Seattle Center and the Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative, and although our organization wasn’t the winner of an award, we were honored to be apart of such an empowering event. We got a chance to meet, and acknowledge some really awesome youth who have made incredible peace efforts in the community, and among their peers.

Mayor Mike McGuinn presented each nominee with a certificate of appreciation honoring their work and commitment to keeping the Dream alive, followed by a performance of the US National, and Black National Anthem performed by the Human Harmony Children’s Choir. We heard a spoken word version of Dr. King’s “Beyond Vietnam” speech, given by the CD Forum, and a special acknowledgment from the Seattle Center Director Robert Nellams.

We’d like to congratulate all of the nominees who received The Martin Luther King, Jr. Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Award. WAY TO GO! You have set an amazing example with your leadership skills, and passion for empowerment. We must continue to encourage work like this throughout our communities; allow young people to have a “Voice”, and promote programs with results of a Positive Self Image.

“The time is always right to do what is right”
-Dr. Martin Luther King Jr
