HOSTED thanks community for support in 2020

Thank you to all who have lent a hand to help HOSTED improve our neighbors health and safety in Othello neighborhood with a focus on NW corner of MLK and S Othello St., John C. Little Sr Park, and NewHolly Unity Trail! Without your help, HOSTED would not have been able to do the following:

  • Complete the Places for People construction work at the Inflorescence Mural Plaza to make this area by Othello Safeway safer and more accessible for the pedestrians who move through here regularly
  • Convince SPU to add garbage and recycle bins to the west end of Inflorescence Mural Plaza and confirm that these additions are used regularly and have reduced the garbage in the planters and around the space.
  • Add additional colorful planters to the Plaza and run a contest to have a community designed crosswalk connecting the plaza to Othello Square across Othello St with financial support from Seattle Department of Neighborhoods and the developer of Willow Crossing affordable apartments in construction now.
  • Get feedback from 112 neighbors about what we should do next with Inflorescence Mural Plaza. Taking up the suggestion given by many to plant more flowers in the new planters and at our Unity Trail in NewHolly to be ready to bring joy this Spring and Summer.
  • Hold monthly community gatherings and support partner activities that fit the CDC guidelines to keep everyone healthy, maintain the spaces, and engage community members in improving our public spaces.
  • Thanks to King County and SE Seattle Sewers support, we were able to give out supplies like face masks, hand sanitizer and gloves at all of our community connection activities and many put on by our community partners.
  • Support our NewHolly youth’s safe summer and fall programming around gardening and community beautification to remain active and engaging safely once Stay Home order was lifted but restrictions on gathering were still in place.
  • Support our neighbors working with city folks and homeless service providers on addressing the safety and health concerns for the campers in and the neighbors around John C. Little Sr Park this fall.

In 2021, we plan to continue connecting with neighbors and partners to work together on improving all people’s health and well being when out in our Othello neighborhood public spaces in ways that are safe and fun.

We are working toward contracting with King County Communities of Opportunity, GMD Development, Seattle Department of Transportation, and Seattle Department of Neighborhoods with our Fiscal Sponsor, HomeSight, to continue community engagement, improve street safety in NewHolly/Holly Park, implement a community designed crosswalk on east leg of 39th and S Othello St, and maintain/activate our public spaces now and when we can gather
(safely together in person again. We could not do any of this without your support. Thank you!

Cheers,
Cynda
