Another season ends, and another begins. I like to think that life is a spiral — where all of us are circling the same old challenges and narratives. Every cycle we have the opportunity to deepen our lessons and hopefully create new timelines.

In this new season, my heart is heavy for our migrant communities. As farmers and gardeners buy their seeds, soil, and tools for the spring and summer, I can’t help but think of the exploitation that occurs for these items to come into our hands.

Most likely, a migrant farmworker harvested those seeds, up-potted those starts, or delivered your package to your doorstep. It’s this invisible labor that isn’t talked about enough. Migrant communities hold up our food systems at the expense of their exploitation, and instead of uplifting them, the current administration is targeting them through the lens of hate.

We are spiraling around the same storyline of racial capitalism — what will you do this time around?

Things you can do at this time:

  • Take a Know Your Rights Against ICE training
  • Create safety plans/protocols within your communities and workplaces
  • Divest from exploitative companies; invest in small, local businesses
