Well we did it!!!
We inspired youth and families about the importance of education through the Back2School Bash.
The 7th Annual 2009 Rainier Beach Back2School Bash’s’ success was a result of a lot people committed to the Rainier Beach neighborhood. We pulled together and made something fantastic happen in serving our community.
Here are just a few of this year’s accomplishments:
- Provided school supplies to over 700 young people.
- Exposed over 500 families to services that can help them have a higher quality of life.
- Brought together 36 organizations that provide services to this neighborhood.
- Inspired over 30 people to volunteer over 300 hours in support of the Bash.
- Demonstrated tremendous capacity by moving from the park to indoors due to the threat of rain.

Seattle Public Schools
Increasing authentic family and community engagement is one of the cornerstones of the District’s five-year strategic plan, Excellence for All. Family and community engagement happens at all levels – the classroom, the school and the District. Research shows that academic achievement increases as families increase the ways in which they engage with their children around learning. SPS has a deep commitment to supporting families as partners in the success of their students.
A Family and Community Engagement Symposium has been scheduled for April 24. The symposium will feature Dr. Susan Enfield, SPS Chief Academic Officer, as keynote speaker. A wide array of workshops also will be offered to provide information to families about strategies to support learning. The symposium is FREE for families and will be held at Aki Kurose Middle School from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; interpreters will be available. Please note that the event was moved to Aki Kurose from the original location at the John Stanford Center to provide additional space for families.
