You may have seen this beautiful banner, billboard and incredible yard signs hanging around Rainier Beach Neighborhood, they were designed by Mahogany Purpose in a way to establish awareness of our Rainier Beach UNITED Campus? You probably have asked yourself, what do these signs mean? Well, I’m glad you asked.
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an approach to improving safety and promoting positive behavior. It instructs us to explicitly teach desired behaviors (just like any other subject would be taught) and recognizes that for most of us, we will only meet behavior expectations if we know what is expected of us or what the expectations are. PBIS prioritizes establishing, modeling, and teaching behavior expectations early on as a form of prevention and a best practice for establishing a positive and welcoming social culture and climate.
A few years ago at our Annual Back 2 School Bash, neighbors in Rainier Beach voted on our community values or expectations: Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible. With that, Rainier Beach: A Beautiful Safe Place for Youth has launched a social norms campaign promoting these values.
In addition to the campaign, we are hoping to work with businesses and organizations to personalize these behavioral expectations for their space(s). With this service, teams receive training on the PBIS framework and work with specialists to implement signage and strategies to increase safety and cultivate positive welcoming environments for staff, clientele, and customers.
